All landlords should have buy to let landlord's buildings insurance and many buy to let lenders will insist on it as a condition of the mortgage advance.
The need for contents cover will depend on whether the property is being let furnished or unfurnished. If it is furnished then contents insurance is recommended. If the property is unfurnished then the tenant will normally be responsible for the contents insurance.
